The Karnataka Minister for IT and Tourism, Mr D.B. Inamdar, renowned litterateur and former Chairman of the Kannada Develpoment Authority, Mr Baraguru Ramachandrappa, and the IT Secretary, Mr Vivek Kulkarni, at a press conference in Bangalore to announce the latest on usage of Kannada in e-governance.

BANGALORE, Feb. 26

THE implementation of e-Governance is set to gain momentum in Karnataka as the State Government has standardised the Kannada software for administration.

"The usage of Kannada in computers is set to rise in the coming days," said Mr E.V. Ramana Reddy, Director, Department of Information Technology, Government of Karnataka, at a press conference here on Wednesday.

"With the standardisation of the key board and development of the Version 3.0 of Nudi, the Kannada software, by the Department of IT in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre and the Kannada Development Authority, we have almost completed nearly 50 per cent of the tasks set out in the action plan on usage of Kannada in computerised administration," Mr Reddy said. The onus would now be on popularising the software in various State Government departments, he added.

As part of the computerisation initiatives in the State Secretariat, a local area network with some 1,500 nodes has already been set up, in which nearly 800 of them have been activated, Mr Reddy said.

The NIC has developed an administration software `Sachivalaya Vahini' in Kannada, which is being implemented in nearly 30 departments functioning in the Secretariat, he said.

The software includes modules relating to common administration procedures, especially the movement of files, letters, court orders, finance and personal information of employees. It also provides for uploading the service registry and personal information of the employees on the Intranet.

The Department of IT has saved several crores by developing this software, which is expected to implemented in various departments throughout the State, he added.

"Once fully implemented, the Government is planning to Web-enable this software, which in turn gives a chance to the common man to sit at his house and track the movement of files through the Internet," Mr Reddy added.

Karnataka has already taken the lead in e-governance through various initiatives such as Bhoomi - the computerisation of land records and Khajane - computerisation of treasury operations among others.

The standardisation of key board and Kannada software is expected to provide further impetus to the e-governance initiatives, as the usage of local language in computerised administration is expected to go up further.
