Manage the reputation, rethink the proposition
A fundamental premise as old as the science of economics is that all options for a share of the customer's mind or wallet are in some sense mutually competitive. The choice for a middle class family with two college-going children is not just between an expensive holiday and a less expensive one or no holiday at all this year. It is also the savings needed to finance the daughter's overseas travel for her advanced degree next year. In that sense, the value delivered by one's brand must not only compete with that of another in the same category, but the attractiveness of other options _ all of which come from the same family budget. This depends, therefore, on the relative importance accorded to the purchase in the family at any given point in time.
